THIS WEEK IN SLEEP NEWS, Jan 15 - 21

SPECIAL || Recalls, special announcements, breaking news, events

THANK YOU: to everyone who voted for SHC as Healthline's Best Health Blog for 2015. As a busy curator, I did not have a lot of time to commit to asking for upvotes, which is generally how these contests pick a winner, so I doubt SHC will win (winners will be announced soon). However, I absolutely appreciate everyone who made the time to do so (and to nominate us in the first place). Polls closed yesterday. Thanks again!

KUDOS: The online magazine Motherboard takes on sleep health discussions this week in a series of commentaries and articles focused on the whole gamut, from dreams to insomnia, from why we sleep to why we can't. Several posts have made the Curator's Choice in this week's news. Thanks for keeping it real, MB. Explore the series here: You'll Sleep When You're Dead

JAN 26: Arizona Cardinals and the American Sleep Breathing Academy (ASBA) raise snoring and apnea awareness in Phoenix. On Tuesday Jan 26, ProPlayer Health Alliance sponsors two events that compose the nation's largest ever public awareness event dedicated to education about snoring and sleep apnea.

At 530pm, the onsite grand opening of the brand-new Arrowhead Pro Sleep Center in Glendale takes place. Then, at 6:30pm, the public awareness and fundraising party moves to Padre Murphy's in Phoenix, where NFL players Larry Fitzgerald, Roy Green, Eric Dickerson, Seth Joyner, Marcus Allen and others  join with ASBA sleep clinicians to answer questions about sleep disorders and to help people who already have a sleep apnea diagnosis achieve compliance using their prescribed therapiesThe Arizona Cardinals are known supporters for research into and treatment for sleep-disordered breathing.

Both events are sponsored by ProPlayer Health Alliance. ProPlayer's President David Gergen, owner of Gergens Sleep Appliance Lab and the Executive Director of the American Sleep and Breathing Academy, will MC both events. Info: Call David Gergen 602-478-9713

JAN 27: The biology of aging as it relates to our circadian rhythms. Mimi Shirasu-Hiza, PhD presents "A Timely Death: Circadian Regulation and Aging," a free brown-bag lunch seminar held at Columbia University Center for Aging on Wednesday Jan 27 from noon to 130pm. This informal meeting consists of a 40-minute presentation followed by general Q&A session and group discussion. Audience is encouraged to bring their own lunch. More info

JAN 28: Learn about sleep apnea and TMJ in Arlington, TX. Dentists at the Koala Center For Sleep Disorders in Arlington, TX offer free seminars on sleep apnea and TMJ issues, addressing possible noninvasive treatments for both, on Thursday Jan 28 at the Courtyard by Marriott. Two presentations will take place on this day, one at 2pm and the other at 7pm. For more info, and to reserve a seat: call 817-591-7800. More info

For older drivers, sleep meds are linked with car accidents
From the curator: This has to be an open and honest conversation; while the privilege to drive is what keeps some seniors feeling a sense of independence, it is still a privilege that must be taken seriously. Seniors using zolpidem should probably stop driving or drive less. The statistics are too serious to think otherwise.
